qfactor: two days of the very best live electronics, exploring the space between composition, improvisation, electronica and jazz.

The Queen's Hall and Dialogues have teamed up this year to present an intense two days of the best improvised music with live electronics; you will hear a range of new music and performers at the Hall, unlike any before!

We’re going to use the space in a different way too, creating a large sound rig and running a parallel stream of performances in the bar.

the performers…

On the16 February Mr McFall's Chamber present a new project for electric string trio. This is followed by a marathon performance by London's Not Applicable Artists, a collision between Freetronica duo Ollie Bown and Sam Britton and free jazz improvisation featuring Tom Arthurs (Trumpet), Maurizio Ravalico (Percussion) and Lothar Ohlmeier (Sax) with synchronized projections by Squint and Brittski.

in the bar...

Jules Rawlinson (aka Pixelmechanic) curates "Furniture Music" a chilled programme to stretch out to in the bar.

On the evening of the 17 February is different again with a complex night of rhythmic mayhem featuring Beatbox with drummer Steve Argüelles and VJ Miyako. Live electronics and Tuba legend Oren Marshall gives a recital of his latest electronically extended tuba tunes and Norwegian percussionist Thomas Strønen appears with his solo project for percussion and electronics, Pohlitz. Icarus, featuring Sam Britton and Ollie Bown on laptops and live algorithms, bring the festival to an intensely rhythmical close.

in the bar...

Dialogues has invited Han-Earl Park and his guitar Esprit, re-mixer Hannes Raffaseder and Edinburgh-based free improvisers Kresch to decorate the bar with sound during changeovers between acts in the main space.

dialogues discuss…

The music programme is accompanied by a day of artist talks and presentations at the University of Edinburgh.

concert remixes, early february…

To warn of our arrival at The Queen's Hall, we'll also be remixing a couple of concerts cherry picked from The Queen's Hall's already eclectic programme. These remixes will allow the audience to hear the music they've just heard played back again using a specially commissioned concert remixing system.
